Latin American chefs are innovatively blending traditional dishes with global flavors
Tacos y Tequila Festival started with just tacos, however it has evolved to other Latin American dishes!
But first, let’s thank our ancestors for the delicious taco that’s well known around the world, here is a little bit of its history.
History places the start of tacos during pre-Hispanic colonization when Moctezuma utilized the tortillas to hold his food and women use to prepare the lunches wrapped in a tortilla. Hernan Cortez organized the first “Taquiza” at the beginning of the 16th Century. There are different theories of where the word “Taco” came from and one of them is that it came from the indigenous community Nahuatl as the word “tlahco” which means “half’ or “in the middle.” Other legends say that the word was pronounced as “coactacuai” in the náhuatl language which was difficult for the Spaniards to pronounce so ended up changing the word to “taco” . Regardless, now we have many different types of tacos across the world with their different staple ingredient, you will have to be the judge of what your favorite one at our festival is.
EXPANDING TO OTHER Latin American FOODS:
As our festival grew, so did our Latino/Hispanic community and even though our festival is called Tacos y Tequila as it originated that way, we are proud to expand our festival with other Latin American food vendors who will bring flavors from Colombia, El Salvador & Venezuela to name a few. Every country has its own vibrant culinary tradition; however we all have the richness of our flavors in common. Help us celebrate these rich traditions by supporting our Hispanic/Latino food vendors who bring you a piece of their culture through their food.
